Please do not be tempted to buy from a pet store or ‘backyard breeder’ they do not breed for good genetics, temperament or health. Ask if their animals are pedigreed, if not, stay clear! There are a lot of closely related hedgehogs in Canada and a lot carry a fatal genetic disease called Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome aka WHS. I only breed pedigreed hedgehogs that are highly likely to be free from this disease and I offer WHS guarantees. WHS doesn’t typically show up until your little sweetie is 3+ years old. Please, do your research and buy from a responsible ethical breeder that only breeds pedigreed hedgehogs.

Adopting a Retired or Rescued Hedgehog from SVHH

We treat our Mommy's and Daddy's with the utmost respect!
Our mothers will only have a maximum of 2 litters per year and will be retired when they are 3 years old, or sometimes before depending on how they are as mothers.
This means that each female hedgehog will have a maximum of 6 litters in their life time!
Hedgehogs can have anywhere from 0-7 hoglets per litter, though 3-4 is the "norm".
Hoglets are born in a tissue sac that protects momma from their tiny soft quills!

SVHH has retired/rescued hedgehogs available from time to time. These animals are adopted out "as is", I cannot guarantee their health (genetic defects, WHS) or any sort of temperament. Most of my adults are retiring from breeding for a reason, they are either older or not wanting to be a mother. At the time of adoption I will only adopt out animals that are healthy to the best of my knowledge or I will inform the adopter about any issues with health or temperament. Most of my adult hedges will be available for $150 depending on age and temperament. The same cage requirements are needed for adults as it is for babies, and I will request a picture of the cage all set up prior to adoption.

Local Pick-Up

I live on Quadra Island in BC. I go to the Comox airport monthly and can meet in Comox or Campbell River.
Bring a secure box/crate to put your baby into for the drive home.
Depending on Pick-Up location, and distance from my home there might be a fee. I will tell you this prior to adoption.
Baby needs to be paid in full before leaving my home.

Air Shipping

SV Hedgehogs is proud to offer WestJet shipping with their PetSafe shipping option.
Shipping your hoglet is around $80-$160. I do not charge extra for my time, kilometres on my car, gas, or crate when shipping from Comox. Shipping quotes are subject to change!
I can air ship multiple hoglets in 1 shipping container. I will try to reduce the shipping cost by sharing with other adopters, this is not guaranteed but usually works out.
Picking up your hedgehog from the cargo office is easy! I will send you the itinerary, you will show up at the arrival time and show them your photo ID. Then they will hand over the crate! It’s kinda like picking up a parcel at the post office!
Make sure to bring a small pet carrier or high sided cardboard box to put your hedgie into! Line it with a little towel or blanket to keep baby snug for the ride home!
